Sun spots, also known as age spots or liver spots, are a form of pigmentation where areas of the skin darken. These spots typically appear on areas that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, arms, and shoulders.
Sun spots are caused by the overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. When the skin is exposed to UV radiation from the sun, it can stimulate the production of melanin, which can result in darkened areas of skin. Over time, this can lead to the development of sun spots.
The GentleMax Pro can be used to treat sun spots. The laser works by emitting a focused beam of light that is absorbed by the melanin in the sun spots, causing the pigment to break up into smaller particles. These smaller particles are then eliminated by the body’s natural processes, resulting in a more even skin tone.
How the laser works on pigmentation
Simply put, the laser energy is attracted to the melanin in the skin. The melanin which absorbs the light and then is drawn to the surface of the skin without harming the surrounding tissue. The pigmentation will then dry and eventually fall off the skin. It is important to note that multiple treatments are required to achieve maximum results. Pigmentation that is older may take more treatments to eliminate completely versus newer pigmentation which may take less treatments.
Treatments available for pigmentation
Global treatment: We do a “painting” technique where we do an all over reduction of pigmentation (ie on decollete, hands, arms etc) where the area is larger. This will reduce the overall pigmented look of an area.
Spot treatment: This is done on specific sun spots where we target only the one spot or a variety of spots. This technique is done when there are a few solitary spots that need to be treated.
It is important to note that while the GentleMax Pro can effectively treat sun spots, it is important to take steps to prevent future sun damage by wearing sunscreen and protective clothing, and avoiding excessive sun exposure. We recommend the EltaMD 41 sunscreen (recommended by the Canadian Cancer Society) and it is available for purchase at Spa Olivia. All products and devices are Health Canada and FDA approved.
